Make Your Netmeeting Effective

credit cardsNetmeetings are a must for any home office, if you work from home! Whether you are telecommuting on a regular basis, or communicating with co-workers, the kind of software you use will show how serious of a worker you are!

Let them see you!

If you're in a remote location, letting your co-worikers or clients see you.  That extra bit of face time makes a netmeeting invaluable, and increases the level of trust.  If they can see your level of professionalism  - albeit on a computer screen, a personal relationship will develop that they can put stock in.  This increases everyone's comfort level.

Before you send your video to anyone over a webcam, be sure to check your appearance on the video monitor.  Most applications like WebEx, SKYPE or Windows Live Meeting allow you to check what others will see when you transmit your viideo.  How do your clothes look (at least from the waist up :) )?  Your hair?  What about the background.  Does it show a clean, organized office, or is it a mess with kids screaming in the background.  Make sure you are transmitting professionalism in your net meeting as this is what builds the confidence of those you work with!

Some people want high quality video to go out to their meeting members, but usually this isn't really necessary unless you are the CEO of a company.  A $25 web cam will usually do, especially if you can increase the frame rate to above 25 frames per second.

Show off your work!

Whichever application you choose, as your net meeting software, make sure it has a way to show off your work! Here are a few things to look for:
  • Can you show off powerpoint slides?  Can you show video of yourself at the same time?
  • What about other applications - can you show an Excel spreadsheet or other items you may be working on?
  • Can you show/share your desktop with others?

Prepare for your meeting!

Before you start your netmeeting, make SURE you know how to use the software, especially if you are the meeting host!  If you have a second computer, and if it's a big event,  have a meeting with yourself!  Make sure that the recipient of your information will see what YOU want them to, beforehand, and that all of your applications are loaded with the correct files before hand.  Also, doublecheck your appearance and your background, and make sure you have detailed instructions for your meeting attendees for how to join the net meeting.

Our Recommendations

There are many netmeeting tools available, from SKYPE to Windows Meeting Space, however the best tool for a professional meeting by far is WebEx.  With WebEx, you have the ability to share high quality video, as well as any application on your desktop, and Webex's "whiteboard".  When you set up a meeting (just a few clicks!!), you can have WebEx send out a link to joining it.
